Designer flat-panel white radiator on a herringbone hallway floor — modern heating upgrade by On-Tap Plumbing & Heating

Service Overview

What's covered, who it's for, when to call.

What it is

Smart heating upgrades cover everything from a single smart thermostat replacement to a full multi-zone, load-compensating controls retrofit. Done well, modern controls reduce the gap between what your boiler outputs and what your home actually needs — which is where most of the wasted gas in a UK home goes.

Who it's for

Homeowners frustrated by uneven heating, families wanting room-by-room control, anyone watching gas bills climb, landlords upgrading energy ratings, and homeowners adding extensions or new bathrooms where the existing single-thermostat setup no longer suits the layout.

When it's needed

Any time of year — but ideally before winter, so you have the autumn to settle into the schedule and the system can be properly balanced against real heat demand.

Why a professional matters

A modern condensing boiler running against a dumb mechanical thermostat operates nothing like the lab efficiency on the sticker. Load-compensating controls, OpenTherm modulation and proper zoning are where the real-world savings come from — typically 15-25% off annual gas use in our experience.

The Cost of Waiting

Most homes are heated by 1980s logic on a 2020s boiler.

What we see in homes without modern controls:

  • Single thermostat in the hallway — the coolest, draughtiest part of the house — calling for heat the bedrooms never need.
  • Boiler running at 80°C flow temperature regardless of outside conditions, never reaching condensing mode.
  • TRVs seized open or set to max on every radiator, so zoning is theoretical at best.
  • Schedules left on the factory defaults — heating on at 6am even though the family wakes at 7:30am.

Our Process

Five steps. No surprises.

01

Survey

We look at the existing controls, boiler model, hot water setup and how you actually use the home.

02

Recommendation

We specify the right system — Nest, Hive, tado°, Vaillant vSMART or a multi-zone setup — and explain the trade-offs.

03

Fixed-Price Quote

Written quote covering the controls, any wiring centre work and commissioning.

04

Install & Commission

Typically half a day to a day. We pair, configure schedules and (where supported) enable OpenTherm modulation.

05

Walk-Through

We show you the app, set up your accounts, and leave you with a system you can actually use from the sofa.

Why Choose On-Tap

The benefits, plainly stated.

Lower bills

15-25% reductions in annual gas use are typical with load-compensating controls and proper commissioning.

Even comfort

No more bedrooms that bake while the lounge stays cold — multi-zone control puts heat where you want it.

Schedules that fit your life

Geofencing, holiday mode, learning schedules — the system adapts so you don't have to.

Greener heating

Less gas burned means less carbon — without sacrificing any comfort.

Manufacturer-trained

Manufacturer-accredited installs include the smart control ecosystems with extended warranty.

Honest specification

If a £200 single-zone smart thermostat is the right answer, we won't sell you a £900 multi-zone retrofit.

In Depth

Smart controls, explained — what actually saves money.

The smart heating market is full of products that look identical but behave very differently. Here's what matters.

OpenTherm vs on/off control

A standard thermostat is binary — heat on, heat off. OpenTherm and eBus controls tell the boiler exactly how much heat is needed moment-to-moment, letting it modulate down to 20% of full output. The result: longer, gentler heating cycles, lower flow temperatures, condensing mode reached more often, and significantly less gas burned for the same warmth.

Single-zone vs multi-zone

Most UK homes are single-zoned — one thermostat controls everything. Multi-zoning (typically upstairs/downstairs, or living areas/bedrooms) lets you heat each part to the right temperature at the right time. For families with mixed schedules or homes with extensions, the comfort gain alone is worth the upgrade.

Brands we install and why

Google Nest (3rd & 4th gen) — beautiful UI, strong scheduling logic, OpenTherm support on Vaillant. Hive — the easiest app, great for less technical households, well-priced multi-zone kits. tado° — strongest geofencing and per-radiator control via smart TRVs. Vaillant vSMART — the cleanest integration if you have a Vaillant boiler, with full eBus modulation. We'll recommend based on your boiler, layout and how tech-comfortable you are.

Smart TRVs and per-room control

Smart thermostatic radiator valves let you set a schedule per room without re-piping for full zones. Best fitted as part of a tado° or Vaillant system where the head thermostat and the TRVs talk to each other — otherwise you end up with two systems fighting. We commission them as a single coordinated system.

How much does a smart thermostat install cost?+

From £350+VAT fully fitted for a Google Nest or Hive single-zone replacement on an existing boiler. Multi-zone retrofits and smart TRV packages priced individually after a free survey.

Will it really save me money?+

Yes — typically 15-25% off annual gas use when load-compensating controls are properly commissioned against the boiler. Savings are larger in larger or less well-insulated homes.

Which smart thermostat is best?+

It depends on your boiler and household. Vaillant boilers pair best with vSMART. Worcester Bosch supports Nest via OpenTherm. Hive is the friendliest app for less technical users. tado° wins on per-room control.

Will it work with my old boiler?+

Most boilers under 15 years old support smart thermostats. Boilers over 15 years old benefit far more from a replacement with modern controls included — we'll quote both honestly.

Can you set it up with my smart home?+

Yes — all the major brands work with Google Home and Amazon Alexa. We configure the integrations during commissioning if you want them.

Do I need new wiring?+

Sometimes — older systems with wall thermostats and separate hot water programmers may need a wiring centre upgrade. We assess this during the survey and quote accordingly.

How long does the install take?+

Single-zone smart thermostat swap: 2-3 hours. Multi-zone retrofit with smart TRVs: half a day to a full day depending on radiator count.

What areas do you cover?+

Bedfordshire (Bedford, Flitwick, Biggleswade, Barton-le-Clay), Milton Keynes, Luton, Hitchin and Stevenage.
