Service Overview

What's covered, who it's for, when to call.

What it is

A boiler engineer designs, installs, services and repairs the appliance at the heart of your central heating and hot water system. The work spans from a 30-minute diagnostic on a lockout fault to a two-day full system replacement with new pipework, controls and a magnetic filter. We do all of it.

Who it's for

Homeowners whose 12-20 year old boiler is on borrowed time. Anyone with no heat or no hot water who needs a same-day visit. Landlords with portfolio compliance to maintain. Families building extensions where the existing boiler can no longer cope with the heat load. New occupants who want a heating system they can trust before winter.

When it's needed

Before failure, not after. Boilers rarely die without warning — pressure loss, intermittent hot water, banging on start-up, hissing pumps, or rising energy bills despite no usage change are all signals. Planning a replacement at the first symptoms lets you choose the right appliance, schedule the install for a convenient week, and avoid the premium prices of an emergency winter replacement.

Why a professional matters

A boiler is the single most expensive appliance in most homes. Choosing the wrong size or specification wastes money for the next 12-15 years. A combi sized for a 1-bedroom flat in a 4-bed house will struggle in winter; an oversized system boiler will short-cycle, wear faster and use more gas. Proper specification by an experienced engineer pays back the install cost over the boiler's lifetime.

The Cost of Waiting

An old boiler is a slow leak — of money, comfort and safety.

What we see in 15-20 year old systems:

  • Efficiency dropped from a (modern) 92% to a measured 71% — almost a quarter of every pound spent on gas wasted as flue loss.
  • Cast-iron heat exchangers corroded internally, restricting flow and creating hot/cold spots that mask deeper problems.
  • Outdated controls (mechanical timer + single thermostat) running the boiler hotter than required for the load.
  • Parts becoming obsolete — meaning a £200 repair turns into a £2,800 replacement decision under emergency pressure.

Why Choose On-Tap

The benefits, plainly stated.

Up to 18-year warranties

Manufacturer-accredited installer status unlocks the longest parts & labour cover available — up to 18 years on qualifying new installations.

25-30% lower gas use

Modern A-rated condensing boilers paired with load-compensating controls cut consumption dramatically.

Fixed-price install

What we quote is what you pay — no surprise extras mid-job.

1-2 day installs

Most combi swaps complete in a day. Full system conversions in two.

Tidy work

Pipework run cleanly, dust sheets throughout, full clean-up before handover.

Honest sizing

We won't sell you a 36kW combi if a 28kW does the job better. Proper specification protects you long-term.

In Depth

Boilers, explained — what to choose, what to avoid.

Boiler choice is one of the most expensive decisions a homeowner makes, and the advice online ranges from useful to actively wrong. Here's how we think about it.

Combi vs system vs regular (heat-only) boilers

A combi heats water on demand from the mains — no cylinder, no header tank, compact and ideal for 1-3 bedroom homes with one bathroom. A system boiler uses a sealed unvented cylinder for stored hot water — better for larger homes with multiple simultaneous hot water draws. A regular (heat-only) boiler uses a vented cylinder and header tank in the loft — the classic setup for many older properties. The right answer depends on hot water demand, number of bathrooms, mains pressure and existing pipework — not on what's cheapest.

Brands we install and why

We're accredited installers for Worcester Bosch and Vaillant. Both manufacturers offer extended warranties only through accredited installers. Worcester Bosch boilers (Greenstar i, Greenstar 8000) are the dominant UK domestic brand — well supported, parts widely available. Vaillant ecoTEC plus is the engineer's favourite for build quality and quiet operation. We'll happily quote on either; the right choice depends on your property and budget.

What 'a proper install' actually means

Half of a boiler's lifetime efficiency comes from how it's installed and commissioned. A proper install includes: full system power flush before fitting; new magnetic filter (MagnaClean Pro 2 or Adey Pro 3); fresh system inhibitor at correct dosing; pipework upgraded where undersized; condensate trapped and discharged correctly; combustion measured and recorded; every radiator balanced for return temperature; controls commissioned and walked through with the customer. We do all of this as standard.

Repairs vs replacement — the honest answer

If your boiler is under 10 years old, repair almost always makes sense. 10-15 years old, it depends on the part — heat exchangers and fan assemblies tip the maths quickly. Over 15 years, replacement usually saves money inside 2-3 winters. We'll give you the maths in writing before recommending either path, and if a repair is genuinely the right answer we'll say so.

Like-for-like combi swap: one day. Conversion from a system or regular boiler to a combi: 1-2 days. Full system replacement with new cylinder and controls: 2-3 days.

Do you remove the old boiler?+

Yes — old appliance, packaging and all installation debris is removed and disposed of as part of the quoted price.
